"Non-toxic." "Clean-burning." "All natural." None of those words are regulated, which means any candle can print them. If you're trying to buy a genuinely cleaner candle, you have to read past the front label. Here's how — four things that actually matter, and the words that don't.
1. The wax
This is the foundation. Most cheap candles are paraffin — a petroleum byproduct. Cleaner options are soy, coconut, or beeswax. Look for a wax that's actually named on the label; "natural wax blend" often means mostly paraffin with a little soy. (We go deeper here: soy vs. paraffin.) Our pour is 100% natural soy — named, and nothing hiding behind "blend."
2. The wick
A wick should be cotton, wood, or hemp — never a metal core. Lead wicks were banned in the U.S. years ago, but a cored wick still isn't what you want in the air. A hemp wick sidesteps the question entirely: plant fiber, no metal, a steady clean flame.
3. The fragrance
This is where "clean" candles quietly fall apart. Look for "phthalate-free" and IFRA-compliant fragrance. Ignore the "essential oils are the only clean option" myth — many essential oils don't burn well or safely, and a well-formulated phthalate-free fragrance oil is both safer and truer. The thing to actually avoid is a maker who cuts their fragrance to save money, because then they have to overload other things to compensate. We don't cut ours.
4. The dyes and extras
Color and a pretty melt pool often come from synthetic dyes and additives. None of it is necessary. A clean candle usually looks like what it is — cream-colored soy in a simple vessel.
The label words that mean nothing
- "Natural" / "eco" / "clean-burning" — with no specifics, these are decoration. Every flame produces some soot; "clean-burning" alone is a vibe, not a fact.
- "Soy blend" — usually code for mostly paraffin.
- "Essential oil candle" — not automatically safer, and often poorly scented.
What you actually want, in one line: a named clean wax, a metal-free wick, phthalate-free fragrance, and a maker willing to tell you all three without you digging.
That's the whole reason we list ours plainly: 100% natural soy, hemp wick, phthalate-free fragrance, hand-poured in San Diego. No blend, no asterisks. See the current batch.
